I’ve been thinking about my little blog site for a while now and trying to decide what to do with it. While I love blogging about books, there are so many things I’d like to say. So, rather than kill the blog, I’m just going to start writing about whatever is on my mind at any given time.

Right now, what’s on my mind is all that happened with the NFL over the weekend. This will NOT be a political post. This will, however, be a respectful post. The 49ers are my FAVORITE team – oh stop it, they’re in a rebuilding phase and will be back on top soon – and I wasn’t sure how I felt about what Colin Kaepernick did at the time he did it. However, I respected that he had the RIGHT under our Constitution to do it.

I never felt he was disrespecting the flag, the anthem or our nation in any way though. Here is the explanation he gave in 2016:

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

He is very clear that he isn’t disrespecting our country, but he isn’t feeling pride in it because of circumstances and just doesn’t want to stand up for it. He didn’t give it the middle finger. He didn’t talk during the anthem. He didn’t turn his back on the flag. He just politely kneeled. Ever fought with your spouse or friends? Did you want to hug and kiss them when you were feeling angry with them? I GET what he did, I do. It might not have been MY choice, but I get it and I respect that he had the right to do it.

After the president made his Twitter comments on Friday and over the weekend about several NBA players, the NFL decided to join arms and band together to stand against the comments made against their industry. Again, I don’t think they’ve done anything wrong. They are NOT disrespecting the flag, the anthem or our nation by taking a knee. They’re exercising their FIRST AMENDMENT right to speak their minds and have opinions.

Furthermore, millions of parents have taught their children to take a knee when a player is injured during a sporting event. For a multitude of reasons, I feel our nation is severely injured right now. We are having arguments over Civil Rights, riots over racial divides and the White Supremacist groups are again at the forefront of our daily conversations. We are on the brink of nuclear war with North Korea and our leaders are being investigated.

Let’s be VERY clear here; I am NOT placing blame at anyone’s feet. These are the facts of where our nation stands today. Our nation is fractured. Until a cast is put in place to reset the very bones of our nation which we were built upon, I am taking a knee. I hope you will stand with me and do the same. It is NOT disrespect I am showing. It is the opposite in face. I am demonstrating RESPECT, loyalty and empathy to all that my nation is experiencing and to everyone within this country experiencing it. I encourage you all to do the same. Feel free to share pictures of YOU taking a knee for the USA and share them. I hope we begin to heal, together, soon. 💖
